Re-generation
The natural means of bush clearance and re-generation in fynbos regions is of course fire.
The last fire on our property was
over thirty years ago which meant that, when we took over the management in 2004, there were large areas of dense overgrown bush which needed clearing. As well as the larger shrubs, lower ground covering species like bracken and erica had covered large areas, smothering smaller species and preventing the seeds from germinating.
Other problem plants that had proliferated include parasitic plants like mistletoe and dodder which effectively smother and can eventually kill other plants.
With the help of local landscape contractors we have, over the years reduced the areas of dense scrub; cleared large areas of bracken and erica and controlled the problem parasitic plants.
Re-generation of the fynbos is rapid, much as it is after fire. A huge variety of species appear where once there was only a few.
