Welcome to Mattaponi Cape Fynbos Preserve
"A unique place where mountains meet sea and the fynbos flourishes"
Mattaponi is an ocean-side private nature reserve at the tip of the small holiday town of Betty's Bay on the Overberg coast of South Africa's Western Cape.
This website celebrates the huge diversity and natural beauty of the unique Western Cape Fynbos vegetation and the fascinating wildlife it supports, as well encouraging everyone to conserve this awe-inspiring but fragile ecology.
Urban expansion around Cape Town, unchecked agricultural growth, and even unsympathetic development within Betty's Bay - combined with the spread of alien species like the Australian Wattle and New Zealand Christmas Tree - all pose a serious threat to the Fynbos; many species have become extinct and more than 1,000 are endangered.
To flourish and develop, the Fynbos needs to be cherished with gentle management and loving care. We hope that our small preserve will not only raise awareness but also inspire others to follow a similar course.
