Aims
Since 2004, the main aim has been to return Mattaponi as close as possible to its pristine condition prior to its purchase in the 1960's.
Following the clearance of the non-indigenous trees which were planted to provide shelter from the prevailing south easterly winds, the emphasis has been on re-generating the existing fynbos and controlling self seeded alien species. We have also been improving access across the site by clearing existing pathways, creating new pathways and introducing discreet route marking.
We are currently concentrating on increasing the diversity of the flora which, we hope, will in turn encourage a greater diversity of fauna. We are achieving this by reducing areas of overgrown bush and introducing new plants including our own stock raised from collected seed.
We are taking advantage of the considerable amount of perennial water available and establishing irrigation points at strategic positions across the property. This will help greatly with the establishment of newly planted specimens.
